The Meuse, with Europe at its heart!

The Meuse, with the sites of Verdun, the Argonne, and Saint-Mihiel, was at the heart of the First World War. It remains a major destination for “Remembrance Tourism”, where the future of Europe was constructed.
The Meuse has many other historical attractions to discover:
Marking the border between the Germanic empire and France, the Meuse has been closely linked with the history of France for many centuries.
The Treaty of Verdun in 843 divided the Empire of Charlemagne, and Joan of Arc left from Vaucouleurs to push the English out of France. Louis XVI was arrested at Varennes-en-Argonne, and so it goes on

Renaissance and the 17th Century

The Meuse has preserved a remarkable heritage from the periods of the Renaissance and the 17th century, including Bar-le-Duc, with its Upper Town and its Renaissance quarter, Montmédy with Vauban’s fortifications, or the town of Marville, with its Spanish Renaissance appearance, and also Commercy, with its chateau, the summer residence of King Stanislas, father-in-law of Louis XV.
