Notes on the classifications and listings:
- hotels are classified with 0 to 4 stars, and can have different listings
- campsites are classified with 1 to 4 stars, or can be a “countryside camping area”, or offer “camping on the farm”
- furnished tourist accommodation is classified with 1 to 4 stars and most are listed by Gîtes de France with 1 to 4 “épis” (ears of wheat – like star rating)
- bed and breakfast establishments are listed by Gîtes de France or Fleurs de Soleil
- other accommodation (hiking gites, youth hostels, family houses etc) have other approvals. Some hiking gites are listed by Gîtes de France or are approved by FRETE (Fédération Française des Relais d'Etape de Tourisme Equestre – French Federation of Horseback Tourism Accommodation)
- tourist offices are classified with 1 to 4 stars
